SIERRA DESIGNS x CIOTA
The 60/40 cloth fabric used in SIERRA DESIGNS mountain parkas is a fabric woven with 60% cotton in the weft and 40% nylon in the warp, and is commonly called 60/40 cloth or 60/40 because of this ratio. When the cotton in the weft absorbs water and expands, the gaps between the threads become clogged, making it difficult for water to pass through. This, combined with the water-repellent properties unique to nylon, allows the fabric to repel water. In other words, the water-repellent properties are only realized when the fabric gets wet. The combination of 60 % cotton in the weft and 40 % nylon in the warp creates a unique luster and texture.
There may have been other fabrics with water-repellent properties. However, when talking about 60/40 cloth, breathability is essential. It has the breathability that is unique to cotton, so it prevents moisture and stuffiness caused by sweating, making it comfortable to wear. In other words, it is an innovative fabric that combines two contradictory functions: it keeps out rain and expels moisture.
The 100% nylon thread is used in one direction (vertically), so it has excellent tear strength, abrasion resistance, and resistance to snagging and scratches. In addition, the cotton used makes it more fire-resistant than synthetic fibers.
CIOTA has made the cotton part of this fabric using Supima cotton, which is CIOTA 's identity, adding even smoother and more suppleness.
