This fabric is made entirely from biodegradable fibers called polylactic acid (PLA fiber), a plant-based material made by spinning lactic acid from corn and potatoes, which is eventually broken down into water and carbon dioxide by microorganisms in the soil. We used this material, which is made to reduce CO2 emissions when discarded or incinerated, as we thought it would be a good fit for items that inevitably become consumables, such as underwear and socks.
However, there is an indescribable conflict in the fact that it seems as though these products are produced with the intention of being thrown away, and I designed these socks to convey that conflict. They are accompanied by the jacquard knit message "Made For Disposal."
